You may have heard about how some Chinese will shout "hello!" at any white person they see. It pisses some people off; Others have no problem with it and chalk it up to simple curiosity. I think both reactions are correct depending on the situation.
Sometimes, the person saying hello is a poor farmer, a migrant worker, or a little kid, and it really is just said out of curiosity and it's quite friendly. If you say hello back they smile and wave.
Other times, it is a man or teenage male from the city. Their hello is almost always completely insincere. If you respond, they laugh with their buddy or girlfriend and it is very clearly disrespectful.
